How I got in the Truck Business – by Gerard Fairley

I remember when I first thought about getting into the trucking business. I was doing pretty good with Dealer License and the car business, and my partner in that business…wanted to ex

pand into car hauling. I mean we were already buying cars for people 20-30 per month, it made sense to get into the car shipping and transport business too. So we got a used Dually truck and set up our Authority in Miami, Florida (very expensive insurance!) Around that same time, about two years ago, I met a guy in Orlando with a truck company. I was at a gas station buying some orange juice. I was standing behind him in line and he had on a t-shirt. On the back it said “I own a Trucking Company”. I just casually remarked out loud, “how’s the trucking business”? And he half turned around, gave me a little smile and said, ” I can barely keep up with the growth”. I was like really ? So what are you doing, hauling cars

Trucks are an essential business…

He said, Nah.. I got 8 trucks hauling dry freight, much less liability than car hauling. I smiled and vigorously nodded my head as I got a 5min education on the drygoods side of the trucking business, while standing in line to buy orange juice at a gas station. I went on to do my further research, then wind up opening a Truck company just for dry goods (WB Cargo). And the rest is history. Now me and my business partners do this for people. We help people start and set up their own truck company and authority, and get their share of the big money. Maybe you need a hand to guide you long the way, that’s what we do you. It’s your truck company, we are just your very capable assistants managing your day-to-day operations so you don’t have to. Once you decide on how you want to start, then you have to understand the investment cost for each business model. The traditional model of setting up your own authority and getting your own insurance is the most expensive to start and launch, but you retain a much larger percentage of the weekly gross of the loads that are booked for your trucks.

We can take care of all of your day-to-day operations for a flat 18% management fee or only 15% if you have your own factoring company.

Types of Truck Companies

You have several different Types of Companies you can set up running any number of popular trucks:

  1. Dryvan
  2. Flatbed/Low bed
  3. Tanker
  4. Hazmat
  5. Timber
  6. Hotshots

Ok, so here I’m giving you a typical start up cost break down, so you can get an idea of how much of an investment you will need. This only gives you the estimated cost for setting up your Truck Company Operating Authority and getting one (1) truck on the road. If you don’t have a truck yet, you will need at least $5K deposit to secure a truck and another $1,200-$1,500 per month put aside for truck lease payment , extended warranty payments, and truck maintenance. To be well funded, you want to have at least 2 months of truck payments sitting in reserve. Next you can expect to spend about 8$-12K on start-up costs including your truck insurance down payment. Just be very aware that your insurance will be higher or lower based on various factors pertaining to CDL, equipment and the state you set up your company in. It’s more expensive in Florida or Georgia, less expensive in North Carolina and Montana.

Once your Operating Authority (your truck company) is set up, and you have one or two trucks on the road…you may consider expansion. How to expand? We recruit other qualified owner operators to lease on to your company. We handle all the day-to-day operations and you retain a percent of their weekly gross as the home carrier. Or perhaps you get a few more trucks of your own, and get some Employee (company) Drivers. Getting qualified CDL Drivers is a very challenging endeavor in this business, but don’t worry we are here to ensure your success.
